No Asparagus This Year
I won't get to harvest any asparagus this year. I planted one year crowns last year. I read that I would have a light harvest this year. Unfortunately, all my asparagus spears were very thin, too thin to harvest. Now they have all ferned out. I added coffee grounds and chopped leaves as an organic mulch and fertilizer. Maybe next year will be better. If there are any asparagus growers out there who have ideas for helping the bed to thrive, I would love to learn from you!

I debated on whether or not to try asparagus this year. I don't think I have the patience to wait 2 or 3 years to eat it though :) I'm hoping that my garden pans out well this year so maybe I'll be confident enough to try it out next spring...we'll see!
ReplyDeleteI would love to grow asparagus, but I just can't commit. I wish you a good crop next year - I hear there is nothing like a fresh picked spear.
ReplyDeleteGood for you, Katie! Asparagus is so worth growing in a kitchen garden. The time passes quickly and soon you'll be harvesting your own stalks-- and truly it's far superior to what you can bring home from the store. As far as advice, you can keep adding mulch to feed the plant and discourage weeds.
