Planting Garlic

When I went to to my backyard garden this weekend, I noticed that I had overlooked some garlic from last year. It had frost-heaved and sprouted. Since I don't have anything to lose, I tried planting it.  We'll see if it grows well.

I broke the larger garlic clumps up into smaller clumps and replanted them.

I also planted the cloves from the organic garlic that I bought at the grocery store. I planted them about an inch deep and four inches apart.

  1. Last spring I dug out my over wintered shallots, because I wanted to move them to a different bed. They grew beautifully, even better than those that weren't moved, so I'll bet your garlic does the same. I just planted my grocery store garlic today, too.

  2. Good luck with your garlic. I planted mine yesterday too.

  3. Granny & Veggie: Thanks for the reassurance.
Granny: I didn't have any luck with shallots at all. Do you have any tips?

  4. I just separate the cloves and poke them in the ground, just like the garlic. In fact, when I moved my winter planted ones last spring, the tops were green but the bulbs were all mushy, so I just planted a few and threw most of them out. I should have planted all of them, because they grew just fine. In fact, we're still eating them and some have begun to sprout, so that's what I planted yesterday. These, by the way, were started with just a couple of shallots from the grocery store back in the fall of 2008. Some were saved from that crop and planted fall 2009. I didn't get around to planting that crop in the fall of 2010, so I'm trying spring planted ones this year.
